Jan.10 was the day that the barbed wire was patented. Yes I am talking about the twisted stands of wire and barbs at regular intervals’ are used for fencing. It was also used in trench warfare.
It had to be patented! As it the use of it was opposed by the people until a herd of wild charging cattle was contained by it. It was known as the devil’s rope and fence cutting events leading to fence cutting wars were seen.
The use of this became more popular in the post war days when beef got popularized. It launched the era of cattle kings, and it also brought the taxman, with his tax proportions.
It was extensively used to demarcate the concentration camps
1867 Lucien B Smith of Kent Ohio is regarded as its inventor.
1874 Joseph F Glidden received a patent for it.
There are over 530 patented barbed wires with approximately 2000 variations the salesmen sample of these are displayed in the barbed wire museum.
